Michael WHELAN
It is difficult to name a more respected or
well-known artist in the fantasy and science fiction field than
Whelan, winner of the prestigious 'Hugo' award for Best
Professional Artist more often than any other artist in the
history of the award. Whelan's personal artistic vision
translates extraordinarily well into the constraints of book
publishing, so that his illustrative work often stands as the
definitive interpretation of an author's work; the examples of
'Dragonriders of Pern' (Anne McCaffrey's series), or 'Little
Fuzzies' (H. Beam Piper stories) come to mind.
A constantly escalating demand for his work,
combined with a low output of original paintings - primarily due
to the great time and attention he devotes to producing each one,
and his great reluctance to part with any one of them - has given
rise to self -published limited edition prints, and other items.
In recent years, Whelan also has created more visionary images
published exclusively by leading gallery art publishers, such as
Mill Pond Press, and Mithril Publishing. Whelan's decided
interest in persuing more personal works will undoubtedly affect
his illustrative output even further, so I'm pleased to be able
to offer a fine selection of his original paintings.
